On 2nd April 2008 it was announced that after 336 years, Britannia would disappear from our circulating coinage. Up until then she had appeared every year from 1672. It was a decision that left the coin world reeling.
But this year Britannia is back, reinstated on the newly issued UK £2 coin.
To celebrate the return of Britannia a brand new limited edition coin cover has been issued featuring this historic new £2 coin, and just 350 collectors will be able to own it.
It's the first time since its introduction in 1997 that the design has been changed on the £2 so this is a major change to UK coinage. The coin itself also carries the new Jody Clark image of Her Majesty the Queen on the obverse, making it even more sought-after.
Your coin cover also features a pre-decimal penny and a large pre-1997 50p piece, both featuring images of Britannia.
The three coins, which fit perfectly as a series, are complemented by three Royal Mail first class stamps bearing the union flag. And as a fitting triumph for the return of Britannia these stamps are postmarked 2nd April 2015. It was exactly seven years earlier that the demise of Britannia was announced (2nd April 2008).
The Celebrating Britannia coin cover cachet bears a Victorian lithograph of Britannia with her armour and Corinthian helmet and comes in a presentation folder with certificate of authenticity. Each cover is also hand-numbered in gold ink.
The worldwide limited edition is just 350. With such a low edition limit an early response is recommended.
