Weightlifting Olympic 50p
The Weightlifting 50p was issued as part of a series of 29 Olympic 50ps in commemoration of London 2012, with each 50p featuring a different Olympic Sport.
The practice of lifting heavy stones to determine one's strength commenced in ancient times, and featured in the first modern Olympics in 1896. Olympic weightlifting consists of two movements, first the snatch, then the clean jerk.
The 50p was designed by Rob Shakespeare, a police officer and past weightlifter. The coin features only the outline of the weight lifter in starting position.
