Guernsey 1978 Royal Visit 25p
In 1978 Queen Elizabeth II carried out an official Royal Visit to Guernsey with Prince Philip.
They were greeted by thousands of children at the port when they arrived and meet with young children involved in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Prior to this, the Queen had only visited once before since being crowned.
To celebrate such an exciting occasion, Guernsey issued a Royal Visit 25p commemorative coin.
25p commemorative coins were issued in Guernsey between 1972 and 1981 as a continuation of the tradition crown coin specifications. However, they since 1981 they have been replaced by the commemorative £5 coin we have become so familiar with.
The reverse image pictures the three lions in a shield with the script ‘Royal Visit’ and ‘Bailiwick of Guernsey’. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by engraver Arnold Machin.
