A remarkable collection of all twenty-five 2½d stamps issued between 1875 and 1881 – the celebrated Rosy Mauve and Blue series.
The Secret of the Plate Numbers
Many Victorian stamps have tiny numerals hidden within their design. On the 2½d stamps they can be seen above the value to the left and right of the Queen’s head. These are the Plate Numbers, and indicate which printing plate was used to produce the stamp.
Today, the knowledgeable collector can look at historical records and identify how many stamps were printed from each plate, therefore gaining a greater understanding of their value and rarity.
One of the hardest collections to bring together
Complete sets of plate numbers in ascending order are extremely sought after by collectors, however very few achieve this ambitious goal. But today you have the chance to secure one of the hardest to find Plate Number collections in full - the Complete 2½d Rosy Mauve and Blue Series.
The elusive 2½d Rosy Mauve Plate 17 is by far the rarest of the stamps in the set, as just days into its print run the decision was take to switch to blue ink. Consequently Plate Number “17” appears on two stamps in the collection – but only a tiny amount were ever printed in Rosy Mauve.
The complete collection comprises 25 stamps, Rosy Mauve Plate Numbers 1-17 and Blue Plate Numbers 17-23. The Rosy Mauve Plate 3 stamp was printed on two types of watermarked paper, so both are included for completeness.
This striking set is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Victorian pioneers, working mostly by candlelight without the benefits of today’s digital devices.
The collection will arrive in a Deluxe Wooden Presentation Case, perfect to keep it in pristine condition and possibly the best way to view your stamps. It will also be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity testifying to the age of the stamps.
Remember, every stamp in the collection is guaranteed to be at least 130 years old!
