A Soldier's Story First World War Centenary Silver Coin Cover - 495 Available

William Noel Hodgson joined the 9th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment on the outbreak of war in 1914. He was ready to do his bit for “King and Country”.

On 25 September 1915 at the Battle of Loos, he held a captured trench without reinforcements for 36 hours. As a result he was awarded the Military Cross. The following year he lost his life at the first day of the Somme. He was one of 19,000 British men to perish that day.

William’s story, though poignant, mirrors that of thousands of men who fought in the Great War. But there was one difference. William Noel Hodgson was a poet and in 1917 his works were published. Among them was the poem “Before Action”.

It was the line “Make me a soldier, Lord” from that poem that is inspiration for this official First World War stamp issue, entitled “A Soldier’s Story”.

You can now own these stamps in an exclusive limited edition Silver Proof Coin Cover.

The six stamps tell the story of the millions of men who joined up in response to Kitchener’s rallying cry “Your country needs You”, through their training and off on their final deployment. Everyone one of them silently praying “Make me a soldier, Lord”.  The stamps have been postmarked on their First Day of Issue – 19thFebruary 2014.

At the heart of the cover sits a Sterling Silver £5 coin struck to the finest Proof finish alongside a photograph of two uniformed soldiers leaving for war carrying their kit upon their   backs.  Completing your cover is the moving quote from the poem by William Noel Hodgson ‘Before Action.’

Silver coin covers have a history of selling out and with a strict edition limit of just 495 worldwide, combined with the increasing level of interest in all First World War issues from our collectors, we are expecting a sell-out.
