1981 Jersey Square £1 Coin

To commemorate the bicentenary of the Battle of Jersey a special square £1 coin was issued in 1981 .

The reverse of this uniquely shaped coin features the Jersey coat of arms royally crowned in front of a cross, with the years 1781 and 1981 either side. The denomination and engraved words, ‘Bicentenary of The Battle of Jersey’, form a circle around the design.

The reverse features the second portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth by Arnold Machin, with the Queen wearing the tiara given to her as a wedding present from her grandmother, Queen Mary.

This coin is particularly sought after because of its unusual square shape, and because Jersey coinage typically has low mintages due to the island’s small population.

It is also difficult to build up a collection of Jersey coins because the island’s coinage is not legal tender in the rest of the UK.
