New UK Piedfort Issue Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of D-Day

This year we mark the 75th Anniversary of the Normandy landings. To commemorate this historic anniversary, a new United Kingdom £2 has been authorised for release. The Royal Mint has released a number of precious metal versions of the new £2, but there is one particular coin that stands out above all others. That’s the Silver Proof Piedfort issue.

UK 2019 D-Day 75th Anniversary Silver Proof Piedfort £2 Coin

This new £2 coin is struck from .925 Sterling Silver to an immaculate proof finish. The reverse design, by Stephen Taylor, captures the magnitude of the operation with a design inspired by military maps and featuring the codenames of the 5 beaches – Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

Visually Piedforts are a real talking point. They are struck on superior double-thickness blanks, normally in Sterling Silver and finished to the very highest proof quality. Double the thickness means they are double the weight of the Silver Proof issue and contain double the amount of Silver.

Surprisingly low edition limit

Piedforts are the pinnacle of Royal Mint craftsmanship and have some of the fastest sell-out rates due to their high collectability and low edition limits.

The single coin edition limit for the D-Day £2 Silver Proof Piedfort is just 2,000 – that’s UNDER HALF of the edition limit of the standard Silver Proof issue.

This remarkably low edition limit is very surprising considering the historic importance of the commemorative. This is surely going to make this issue even more sought-after amongst collectors.

Even more so when you consider earlier this year the 2019 Stephen Hawking 50p Silver Proof Piedfort with a higher edition limit of 2,500 became the fastest selling Piedfort EVER, and completely sold out at the Mint within 2 hours of release.
