Decimalisation was the biggest change the UK’s currency ever saw and the official date of the switchover, 15th February 1971, was an important moment in British history. It became known as “Decimal Day” and was an iconic moment for Britain and The Royal Mint, who had to issue billions of new coins in time for the change.

And now, 50 years later, a BRAND NEW UK 50p has just been released to commemorate the 50th anniversary. Created by Dominique Evans, the design shows a nostalgic reverse inspired by our pre-decimal coinage. A limited number of these coins have been selected to be included in this collection.

Britain’s First Decimal Coins

Paired alongside each 50p is a historic ‘Britain’s First Decimal Coins” pack. First issued by The Royal Mint for the Decimal switchover, these original blue packs show the first ever decimal coins to enter circulation (Half Penny, One Pence, Two Pence, Five Pence, and Ten Pence). Accompanying this is a certificate explaining the new decimal rules.

Some of these coins were actually issued from 1968 onwards, three years prior to the decimal switch over, as a way of helping the public acclimatise to the change!
