Guernsey 1977 Silver Jubilee 25p
In 1997 Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee. To celebrate her twenty-five years on the throne Guernsey issued this commemorative 25p coin in the specifications of a traditional crown.
The reverse of the coin depicts an aerial view of Castle Cornet, an island castle off the coast of Guernsey. Importantly, not only is the castle of historical significance to Guernsey for defence, it is also where they carry out their celebrations for the Queen’s birthday every year with their annual gun salute.
The reverse engraving of Castle Cornet and the obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth were designed by Arnold Machin.
Guernsey coinage is renowned for having low mintage figures due to their smaller population, and with a mintage of just 207,000 compared to the 37 million UK Silver Jubilee crowns, this sought-after coin really is a must-have for any collector.
25p commemorative coins were only issued in Guernsey until 1981, when they were replaced with the commemorative £5 coins we are so familiar with today.
