2005 Horatio Nelson £5

Commemorating the most outstanding British admiral of time, The Royal Mint issued a £5 coin in 2005.

At just 20 years old, Horatio Nelson commanded a frigate in the West Indies, and served in the American War of Independence. And, after being recalled into service in 1972, he rose to the rank of vice-admiral.

The spectacular victory over the combined navies of France and Spain off Cape Trafalgar on 21 October 1805 was marred by his death. He was fatally wounded by a French sharpshooter and died soon afterwards. His body was later brought home from Gibraltar and he became the first commoner ever to receive a State Funeral.

The edge inscription of this commemorative £5 reads: ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERYMAN TO DO HIS DUTY. Nelson sent these words from his flagship HMS Victory as the Battle of Trafalgar was about to commence.

This coin is no longer available from The Royal Mint and, due to the difficulty in sourcing this issue, stocks are incredibly limited.
