The precedent of a coin for the Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1972 was followed by a £5 coin for the Golden Anniversary in 1997, but the design broke entirely new ground. It marked a startling departure from recent practice in that it had a jugate (double portrait) obverse which has not been used since the reign of William and Mary in the late 17th Century.
