The Design

This innovative reverse design by Royal Mint graphic designer David Knapton pays tribute to this great British scientist and includes ‘Photograph 51’ — the X-ray diffraction image taken by Franklin, which was essential for developing a model of DNA.

What’s more, this 50p coin has been developed in partnership with King’s College London, where Franklin’s ground-breaking research was carried out.
