Made from genuine World War II Shell Cases: US Penny
Today, a small number of collectors have the chance to secure a genuine World War II Lincoln Penny struck from the copper extracted from shell cases used in battle.
The Story
During World War II, a scarcity of copper prompted the U.S. Mint to explore alternatives for penny production.
In 1943, steel pennies were introduced, but they faced issues like rusting and public resistance, therefore to preserve the penny's traditional appearance, the Mint turned to an innovative solution: using reclaimed copper from old shell cases.
Repurposed for a limited run of Lincoln Pennies, the shell cases were collected from battlefields and battleships across the globe, creating one of the most interesting coins in history.
