Charles was born 19th November 1600, to James VI of Scotland,
and Anne of Denmark.
In 1603, his father became king of England and Ireland. In 1612,
Charles became heir to the throne.
Charles acceded to the throne in 1625, and married Henrietta
Maria of France.
After dissolving parliament several times, he finally dismissed
them to rule alone in 1629. He became increasingly unpopular, due
to the fact that without parliament he had to raise money other
ways.
He was later forced to call parliament to fund fighting the
Scots, who were uneasy about him ruling alone. There was further
dispute in 1641, when arguments occurred over the command of an
army to suppress an uprising in Ireland.
Charles tried to have several members of parliament
arrested.
Civil war broke out in 1642. Thanks to an alliance between the
Scots and parliament, the Royalists were defeated between 1645, and
1646. Charles surrendered to the Scots, and was handed over to
parliament in 1646.
He escaped to the Isle of Wight in 1647, and caused a second
civil War. Many MP's thought that with the King around, there would
never be peace, so they put him on trial for treason.
Charles I was executed in 1649, after being found guilty of
treason.
