Princess Diana

Full name: Diana Frances Mountbatten-Windsor

Born: 1st July 1961

Place of Birth: Sandringham, Norfolk

Occupation: First wife of Prince Charles

Died: 31st August 1997

Lady Diana Frances Spencer was born on 1st July 1961 at Park House, near Sandringham, Norfolk.  Diana was the youngest daughter of the then Viscount and Viscountess of Althorp.  Now the late Earl Spencer, Diana's father was Equerry to George VI and The Queen for a short time.  In 1975, the Spencer family, including Diana's two elder sister and younger brother, moved to the Spencer seat, a stately house in Northamptonshire.

Diana was educated at West Heath Boarding School in Kent and attended finishing school in Switzerland in 1977.  The engagement of Diana and Princes Charles was announced on 24th February 1981 and were married on 29th July 1981 at St. Paul's Cathedral.  Diana, Princess of Wales was the first Englishwoman to marry a heir to the throne for 300 years.

The royal couple had two children, Prince William Arthur Phillip Louis, born on 21st June 1982 and Prince Henry (Harry) Charles Albert David, born on 15th September 1984.

Diana took an active public role and carried out many royal duties. Diana's first royal tour was in October 1981 when she completed a three-day visit to Wales and in 1983 she toured Australia and New Zealand with Prince Charles.  Diana's first solo tour was in February 1984 when she visited Norway to watch a performance by the London City Ballet before travelling to a number of other countries, including a the US, Germany and Pakistan.

Diana was well-known for her dedication to charity work and was president or patron of over 100 charities including Centrepoint, a homeless charity, National Aids Trust and Great Ormond Street.  Diana was also actively engaged in a campaign for a ban on the use of land mines and helped campaign for a number of projects in places such as Sarajevo and Angola.

The Prince of Wales and Diana divorced in August 1996, which meant Diana had to resign from most of her charities but she still worked closely with a number of those that were especially important to her.

After divorcing Prince Charles, Diana still continued to accompany the Royal family on major national occasions such as the 50th anniversary commemorations of VE day.

Tragically, Diana died on 31st August 1997 as a result of a fatal car crash in Paris, which devastated the entire nation. Diana's funeral at Westminster Abbey was a solemn occasion but she is still remembered today for her extensive charity work and caring demeanour.

In 2007, ten years after her death, Prince William and Prince Harry organised a concert in memory of Diana on 1st July, which would have been her 46th Birthday and the proceeds raised were donated to her charities.
