Edward was born on 9 November 1841, the eldest son of Queen
Victoria and Prince Albert.
He was groomed to become king from an early age.
He was given the best education, and his parents had extremely
high hopes for him. Edward did not meet many of his parents'
expectations. He was well known for his social activities, and
caused scandal regularly.
Prince Albert visited Wales to talk to Edward after a public
liaison with an actress. Unfortunately, he died two weeks later,
and Victoria partially blamed Edward.
Victoria limited Edward's political duties, she only let him
perform public duties. He was only allowed to act as her deputy
from 1898.
When Victoria died in 1901, Edward succeeded to the throne as
Edward VII at the age of 59. He was heir for the longest period in
British history.
The Edwardian age was an important time for England, when
society grew and changed. Edward reinstated the importance of the
monarchy after his mother's withdrawal from society and the
public.
He only reigned for 9 years, and died May 6, 1910.
