As the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain, George was born
28 May 1660, to the Duke of Brunswick- Lüneburg.
The Act of Settlement was put in place to make sure England
would have a Protestant ruler, because of this George's mother was
chosen heiress to the English throne.
George became king in 1714, when both his mother and Queen Anne
died.
In 1715, George was faced with a rebellion by supporters of
James Stuart. Stuart had stronger claims to the throne, but he
wasn't in line because he was Catholic.
George suppressed the rebellion, only to be faced with another
smaller one in 1719.
The Tories sympathised with the rebellion, so George asked the
Whigs for support. During his reign, Whigs dominated parliament.
They made decisions for George, because he was unable to speak
fluent English.
George dealt with foreign affairs, and managed to form an
alliance with France between 1717-1718.
He was disliked by the public, because of his inability to speak
fluent English combined with his bad relationship with his son, and
the fact he imprisoned his own wife under false accusations of
infidelity.
Following an economic crisis, George became even more unpopular,
and less involved in Government decisions.
George died in 1727, and his son became George II.
